1965年創立。カリフォルニア大学群の一つで、メルセド校(2005年開校)の次に新しい。新設校ながら、全米の州立大ランキングの上位に入る名門校に成長した。サンフランシスコから南に約120キロ、モントレー湾を望む高台に立地する。シリコンバレーにも比較的近い。2000エーカーの広大なキャンパスには牧場や森林があり、アウトドア派には絶好の環境。構内には学生の移動のためにシャトルバスが走っている。
