第二次大戦後の1957年創立。バージニア州でも富裕層の居住する郊外住宅地として知られるフェアファックスに立地する州立大学。キャンパス外から通う学生が多く、平均年齢21歳と通常よりやや高い。学生数はバージニア州で一番多く、経済学部の教授は今まで2つのノーベル賞を受賞するなど、開学50年弱ではあるが、着実に頭角を現している。人気の専攻は心理学、経済学で、他に国際政治、コンピュータサイエンス、情報管理学などもある。
