1898年創立。メリーランド州の教員養成専門校として始まり、のち州立大学となった。電子顕微鏡、プラネタリウム、植物園など専門的な設備が整っている。キャンパス内には11もの寮があり、新入生の約70％、全体の約35％が寮生活をしている。人気の専攻は、経営学、初等教育学、心理学など。学生の90％が地元メリーランド州出身。
