1916年創立。ウィスコンシン州オークレア（人口約61,700人）に位置する大規模州立大学。ミネソタ州の２大都市ミネアポリス、セントポールから約140キロ離れているが、空路、陸路で容易にアクセスできる。政府の共同研究プロジェクトは通常、大規模施設の大学院生にしか認めていないが、オークレア大学ではそれを大学生にも認めている。学生が国外で学ぶ機会も多く、約30カ国のプログラムを選んで、4人に１人が体験している。
