大学の紹介
1872年創立。バージニア州立の工科大学。通称はVirginia Tech。当初はバージニア農工大学（Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College）と称した。現在はバージニア州西部ブラックスバーグに2600エーカーのキャンパスを構え、バージニア州で最多のフルタイム学生を抱える総合大学に成長した。７つのカレッジと大学院からなり、学部段階は60の専攻、大学院レベルでは140以上のプログラムを提供している。農学、工学、建築学、獣医学、自然資源学などが伝統的に強い。これら理工系のほか、コミュニケーションも人気の専攻。1980年代に工学系の全学生にパソコン所持を義務づけるなど、IT関係の研究・教育も進んでいる。ホッケー、フットボールの強豪校で、66,000人収容のスタジアムでのフットボール試合は大いに盛り上がる。学食がおいしいことでもよく知られている。
