1963年創立。社会科学、行動科学の研究に重点を置き、革新的な思考を尊重する大学。五つの小規模な大学で構成するClaremont Collegesの一つ。設立時は女子大であったが、現在は男女共学。約半数の学生がカリフォルニア州の出身だが、ニューヨーク州、テキサス州、オレゴン州、マサチューセッツ州、コネチカット州などの出身者もそこそこ多い。人気の専攻学科は心理学、社会学、英語学、映像学、女性学、生物学など。学生の個性を伸ばすことを重視し、海外で学ぶ多彩なプログラムでも知られている。授業は少人数制で、留学生へも配慮も行き届いている。学食もおいしいと評判。全米の大学の中で図書館が最も充実している大学の一つに選ばれた。
