1893年創立。当初は地域の教員養成の専門校として設立され、のち州立大学となった。現在は学生数約1万人の中規模総合大学に成長した。キャンパスの位置するベリンガムは人口約6万人の小さな街で、国境を越えてカナダにもアクセスできる。215エーカーのキャンパスはベンガル湾に面し、カフェテリアからは海に沈む夕日を間近に眺めることができる。周囲を山や湖に囲まれ、一年を通じてアウトドアレジャーには事欠かない。
