大学の紹介
1834年創立。南部屈指の名門私立総合大学。中規模大学ながら、メディカルスクールやロースクールをもつ。大学のモットーは“Pro Humanitate” (For Humanity)で、自分たちの知識・才能・慈悲は他の人のために使おうという意味。学生たちがよく勉強するため、“Work Forest”（勤勉の森）というニックネームがついている。大学課程の学生にもリサーチの機会が多くあり、リベラルアーツ教育と研究のバランスがよい。キャンパスにはレンガで建てられた40ものジョージア様式の建物があり、花や木々に囲まれたキャンパスは美しい。大学が位置する町ウィンストン・セーラムは文化が豊かで、キャンパスの近くに美術館や博物館もある。日本でも有名なクリスピークリームドーナツが生まれた町としても有名。
