1839年創立。「ミズー（Mizzou）」の愛称で呼ばれる大規模大学で、250以上の専攻を設けている。中でも人気があるのはビジネス、生物学、心理学など。世界の大学で最初に設置されたジャーナリズムのプログラムは定評があり、創作文芸の分野でも優れたカリキュラムを誇る。大学院の教育に力を入れているが、教授の研究の手伝いをする機会は大学生にも与えられる。アメリカ人学の８８％はミズーリ州出身。スポーツはバスケットボールとフットボールが強い。大学は学園都市コロンビアに立地し、環境もよい。
