1844年創立。1882年に共学となる。「Ole Miss」の愛称で知られる。4つのキャンパスがあり、なかでも人口約1万人強のオックスフォードという街に位置するキャンパスは中心的存在。研究に力を入れている大学でキャンパス内には約20もの研究所が点在する。ミシシッピー州で初めて設立された公立大学で、南部では最も早期に女子学生を受け入れ、女性教員を採用したことで知られる。医学部に合格するのは約78％と勉強に熱心。全米の約500の大学のうち約43番目にアフリカンアメリカンで博士号を最も多く輩出している取得している。
