1971年創立の新しい大学。当初は、個々の学生がそれぞれに卒業までのカリキュラムを組み、成績評価はアルファベットではなく教員の文章によりなされ、その教員の多くが産官民の現場で実地に活躍している、というユニークなシステムを売りにしていた。今では一般的でオーソドックスな大学システムに移行しつつあるが、個々の学生に自由にカリキュラムを組ませるシステムを取り入れたのはこの大学がアメリカで最初だといわれ、そのリベラルな学風を一つのアピールポイントとしている。
