1896年創立。アフリカ系アメリカ人（黒人）に職業訓練を行い、教育することを目的に設立されたキリスト教系の小規模私立大学。Seventh-day Adventismという教派で、菜食主義を重んじるのが特徴。アラバマ州ハンツビルに1,000エーカーを越す広大な敷地を有している。ハンツビルは、アパラチア山脈の丘陵地帯にあるテネシー渓谷に抱かれた都市。NASAマーシャルスペースセンターの本拠地として認知度が高く、全米で最も前進的な都市として知られている。州内だけでなく、南部諸州及び外国からの学生が多様な社会を形成し、異種文化に触れる機会も多い。
