1873年創立。ミズーリ州民のための教育機関として設立された中規模州立大学で、学生の9割以上が同州出身者。キャンパスの立地するケープジラードは著名な児童文学作品「トムソーヤの冒険」の舞台として知られる。全米のベストタウン50に選ばれたこともある美しい街。広大なキャンパスは緑が豊かで、白を基調とした建物が点在している。「地元に根付いた大学」としてメディアでも評価されている。中規模州立大学ながら、伝統的なリベラルアーツ教育にも重きを置いている。
