1969年創立。アラバマ州バーミンガム（人口約24万人）に立地する州立大学。ここは以前、「鉄鋼業の街」として知られたが、現在では大学が最大の雇用先として貢献している。メディカルスクール（医学専門大学院）の評価が高く、大学付属病院では20年前からAIDSワクチンの研究に力を入れている。U.S. News and World Report 2006では全米メディカルスクールのトップ50にランクした。13の学部・大学院から成り、約140種類の学士号を提供している。
